Antivirus Software for Personally Owned PCs

Up to date antivirus software is a must if you're using a Windows-based computer. Canisius College is advising all owners of Windows-based computers to protect their systems by downloading and installing free software from Microsoft.

You can learn more and download the latest version of this free antivirus software from Microsoft's website by clicking: Get Security Essentials. On their webpage, Microsoft provides a button for downloading the software file as well as a link to their helpful installation video.

  • Warning: To avoid a software conflict, you must uninstall any other antivirus software from your PC before installing Security Essentials.
  • Be sure to keep the virus definitions up to date so that the software can detect and neutralize new viruses as they come out.

Do you still have ESET Antivirus Software?

The College discontinued the license for ESET Nod32 antivirus software during Summer 2010. If your personally-owned computer is currently running a version of ESET that was covered by the Canisius license, you may have noticed its icon has turned orange and have probably seen several pop-up notifications. In order to ensure that your personally-owned computer remains well protected, please follow the recommendation provided above as soon as possible. The section is entitled "Antivirus Software for Personally Owned PCs".

To remove ESET Antivirus software, just click the Windows Start button, then go to the Control Panel, select Uninstall a Program (or possibly Add/Remove Programs), and remove ESET NOD32 Antivirus. If you have questions or need additional information, please visit or call the ITS Help Desk at (716) 888-8340.
