For a professor, Hypothes.is operates in D2L and their Google Drive, the latter hosting any files shared with students.  

With hypothesis, you will choose the file you want students to read after you create an External Learning Tools link to Hypothes.is.  You create such a link (also referred to as LTI or Learning Tools InterOperability) for every individual text you assign your students to discuss.

You can create a hypothes.is account outside D2L, but you do not need to, and one is created for you automatically if you only operate through D2L.  This is the same for your students, too.

Using Hypothes.is For the First Time (and Installing an Assignment.)

Prepare your Google DriveBefore going into D2L, log into your Canisius Google Drive.  For most of us, clicking the Google Drive link under My Applications in MyCanisius is fastest.
Create an LTI Link

Next, go into your D2L course space.  

In any module within the Content area, click the dropdown menu carat next to Add Existing Activities, and choose External Learning Tools.  Then click Create New LTI Link.

Create an Assignment Link


Add your own title. 

Add the following for the LTI URL: https://lms.hypothes.is/lti_launches

Then click the blue Create and Insert button

Set the Assignment Link to Open in a New Browser Tab

Click the Dropdown Menu Carat next to the new Hypothes.is reading title you just created, and choose Edit Properties In-place.  Check the box next to "Open as an Exteranal Resource.  Then click the module title on the left, or the Content link on the Navbar, to refresh the module within D2L.

Log into your Google Drive

Click on the topic.  You will be taken to a separate browser tab, and presented with the option to enter a website URL, or a PDF in your Google Drive.  For now, choose Select PDF from Google Drive, since that will have you connect your Google Drive to your Hypothes.is identity.  You will be presented with a screen asking you to choose the appropriate Google Drive.  Click to choose your Canisius Google Drive.  Because you are already signed into that Google Drive, it should be listed as an option.

Google will ask you to confirm that Hypothes.is has permission to work with files within your Google Drive.  This is necessary so you can share PDF files with your students.  Click the blue Allow button.


Choose your PDF

Following that, you should see a navigable version of your Google Drive file.  You can search and browse for PDF files.  Choose the appropriate file for your first assignment, or just for a test.

Upon choosing a PDF file, you will see it appear in a viewer, along with the Hypothes.is tools.  Note that a PDF file selected from Google Drive will set that file's Google Drive sharing rule to "Anyone on the internet with this link can view."

Open in Separate Tab

One last step:  In the D2L Content Area, click the dropdown menu caret next to your new Hypothes.is link, and choose "Edit Properties in Place:"

Then, in the following screen, check the box next to "Open as an External Resource."  This means the Hypothes.is screen with your PDF will open to you and your students in a separate browser tab.  This makes it more reliable and much easier to use.  

Simply click the module title on the left, or the Content link on the navbar, to reactivate the link for you.  It's all set!

OCR

In order for PDFs to allow line-by-line, word-by-word highlighting in D2L, they require Optical Character Recognition (OCR) data.  Many PDFs have this already, but those scanned using a campus printer/scanner might require it.  Adobe Acrobat will work for this; as will Hypothes.is's own scanning tool: https://web.hypothes.is/help/how-to-ocr-optimize-pdfs/

Scoring

D2L will integrate scoring with Hypothes.is, such that a grade can be sent from Hypothes.is to D2L's gradebook.  

On the Hypothes.is Content Topic's management screen, click Add a grade item...

Click the + button. 


Enter a name, and points value in the dialog box.  This will create your gradebook item or entry.

Note that in Hypothes.is, you will only be able to enter a point value out of ten-point scale.  D2L will then translate that to a proportionate gradebook value.  

So, if the Hypothes.is assignment is worth five points in your D2L gradebook, 9/10 in Hypothes.is means 4/5 in your D2L gradebook.

This click the blue Save button at the bottom of the screen.

Some faculty may find having to think in terms of 10 points, and it's corresponding grade in their gradebook, as unwieldy.  Here are alternatives:

  • Copy grades down on a sheet of paper as you read and score student comments.  Then, transfer the grades into the D2L gradebook item.
  • Use two display screens, one with the D2L gradebook open, and the other with Hypothes.is.  

Use PDF's Uploaded to D2L

Below, you will find the steps required to use PDF's in D2L for Hypothes.is. We also have a Video Tutorial (Hypothes.is: Use PDF's Uploaded to D2L) and Transcript.

Create a Module in the D2L Course Content area. This will hold all of the PDF's you plan on using for Hypothes.is. In the example, we chose to name the module "PDF's for Hypothes.is". 

Note: DO NOT hide this folder nor the PDF's. If you do, the Hypothes.is link will not work for your students.

2Upload the PDF's that you are planning on using (more PDF's can be added later). You can either drag and drop them to where it says "Drag and drop files here to create and update topics" or go to New>Upload Files and follow the on-screen prompts.

3Follow the steps above to create a Hypothes.is Assignment in another module, just up to creating the LTI link in your D2L course space.

4Click on the Hypothes.is Assignment link. In the page that appears, click on D2L.

In the pop-up that appears, click on the module that is holding your PDF's. Then click on Select.

6Click on the PDF that you want to use. Then click on Select. 

7The page will update and you will see the Assignment details screen. Click on Continue to see a Preview of the Hypothes.is Assignment.

Make sure that the article is the right one and that it is properly OCR'd.

If it is not the right article, look at Edit a Hypothes.is Assignment below. If it is not properly OCR'd (meaning that you are having a hard time highlighting text and/or the annotation on the right is not correct), take a look at Hypothes.is's instructions at the following link: https://web.hypothes.is/help/how-to-ocr-optimize-pdfs/

Use JSTOR for Hypothes.is Assignments

You can use JSTOR Articles directly in Hypothes.is Assignments (Transcript), without the need to download them first. Text-steps coming soon!

Create Group Assignments

In the tutorial below, you will learn how to use D2L Groups to create Group Hypothes.is Assignments. A Video Tutorial (Hypothes.is: Creating Group Assignments) and Transcript are also available. If you want to edit a Hypothes.is Assignment you already have up to be a group assignment, follow the steps in Edit a Hypothes.is Assignment.

Create a D2L Group. To get started, go to My Tools>Groups in the D2L Navbar. Then follow the on-screen prompts.

2Follow either of the above ways to create a Hypothes.is Assignment.

3After you have chosen your PDF, you should see the Assignment Details screen. Click on the checkbox to the left of This is a group assignment. 

4When you do, a drop-down menu titled Group Set will appear. Click on "Select group set" and select the D2L Group Hypothes.is should base it's groups on. 

5The page will update and give you a preview of your article. You can switch between groups in the upper right. The group names will take on the same names that the D2L Groups have. 

Edit a Hypothes.is Assignment

In the tutorial below, you will learn how to use D2L Groups to create Group Hypothes.is Assignments. A Video Tutorial (Hypothes.is: Edit a Hypothes.is Assignment) and Transcript are also available. Note: Any changes to the Assignment will result in the removal of any previous annotations.

1Click on a Hypothes.is Assignment Link to access your Hypothes.is Assignment. 

2Click on "Edit" to the right of the Assignment Title in the upper-left.

3To change the PDF, click on Change to the right of PDF file in D2L. Then follow the on-screen prompts and instructions.

4You can also change the group that Hypothes.is is basing the groups on by selecting the proper group category in the Group Set dropdown menu.  You can even change whether or not the Hypothes.is assignment is a group assignment by checking or unchecking the box to the left of "This is a group assignment".

When you are done making your edits, click on Save. 

Note: If you made no changes, you can simply click on "Back to assignment" in the upper-left corner.

The page will update and you should see your modifications to the assignment.

Note: While the Group Set was changed in this demo, both group sets have a "Group 1" and a "Group 2".
