The New System (Beginning in December 2015)
ComDoc will be on campus starting Tuesday, December 8, 2015 to install new printers across campus. The installation schedule should conclude by the end of January. The first printers to be installed will be in administrative offices and new public spaces. Academic offices and labs will not be affected until after exams are completed.
All of the new printers will utilize the FollowMe print model that will allow users to retrieve their printouts at any printer on campus. Users will be required to use their Canisius College ID card to swipe and release their print jobs. The enhanced security and flexibility offered by the new print services are just some of the new features to be introduced. Mobil printing will also be available soon. Users will then be able to print from tablets and mobile phones.
ComDoc will be on site as the new devices are installed to provide training. They will also be available for follow-up training later in January and February as needed. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the ITS Help Desk at Ext. 8340 or by email at helpdesk@canisius.edu.
Follow Me Printing: a Quick Tutorial
When you print something from your Canisius College Windows PC or Laptop, you will have several options. For nearly all jobs, you want to use Follow Me. To send your document to a Follow Me printer, choose the appropriate Printer option. For black and white jobs, choose "MyGrayscalePrintJob on papercut00." for a color print job, choose "MyColorPrintJob on papercut00." Occasionally, color printouts are nice to have. But consider whether you really need color on your printout. It costs more, and limits the number of printers from which the print job can be printed. All printers, whether capable of color or not, can print a black and white job. You can also send your print job directly and exclusively to the printer that is in or closest to your office. This is only useful if you are using some advanced printing features, that are available through this print cue.
When you go to a follow me printer to get your printout, you will need your Canisius College ID card. Swipe your card in the card slide.
Appearing on the printer's screen will be a menu with options. Choose what you want by pressing the screen with your finger. Your print job(s) will be listed center left. If you press one of the print jobs, the screen will show some basic details about that job on the right. Also, buttons will appear in the lower right enabling you to print or delete (cancel) that print job. Press Print, and after several seconds the printer will print out that job. If you have multiple print jobs waiting for you in the print cue, you can press Print All in the upper right, to print them all at once. If you sent a job to a Follow Me cue while you are logged into a particular printer, you must press Refresh to see that job appear and be available to print it. You will automatically be logged out of the printer soon after you complete a particular print job. But once you have told the printer to print out the jobs you've sent it, you can log out of the printer so that others can log in to do their work. If you start printing a job or jobs, you can log out right away, before they are complete. Your print jobs will still print out properly. In fact, if you're printing a big job, the printer may log you out before the last page is finished. Don't panic! It will complete the job.
To use the photocopier feature, simply scan your card at the printer. Whether or not you have print jobs in the cue, you will see a button in the upper righthand corner of the screen: Use Copier. Pressing this will bring you familiar advanced options for photocopy jobs.

Background on the MFD Program:
Pat Richey, V.P. for Business and Finance, appointed a Printer Task Force to investigate more efficient alternatives for printing & photocopying at the College. The Task Force included members of the Canisius faculty & administration and was chaired by Joel Cohen, Associate V.P. for Library and Information Services.
The findings of the Printer Task Force were compiled and presented in several campus forums announced through Under the Dome. Not only did these sessions provide an opportunity to meet representatives from ComDoc (the vendor who was chosen) but to ask questions & raise concerns as well.

Why are we reducing the number of printers on campus?
In order to avoid waste, conserve paper & toner, and to better manage printing & copying costs, a campus committee of faculty and administrators recommended reducing the number of printers and copiers while increasing the functionality of the remaining devices. (See overview above). As a result, new "multifunction devices" have been purchased that are capable of printing, copying, and scanning.
What are the charges for various printouts?
- Xerox B/W pages are $.008/pg
- Xerox Color pages are $.22/pg
- HP B/W pages are $.035/pg
Can I keep my old printer?
Part of the agreement with ComDoc is for them to take ownership of existing printers for reconditioning, safe disposal, or use elsewhere on our campus. The number of printers and their location is also part of the agreement. Changes in the number of printers will incur cost. So, for all practical purposes, the answer to this question is “no”.
Can we keep the fax machine?
If your department has a fax machine, you may continue to use it, although you may prefer to send scanned PDFs instead.
Can I privately purchase a printer?
Printers purchased privately will receive no support from Canisius College. Neither technical support, nor support for purchase of supplies will be available.
How do I get help with a printer?
Call Com Doc at 1-800-321-4846 for help with printer problems. All supported devices should have a ComDoc "Service and Supplies" sticker on them. When calling ComDoc for support, they will ask you for the EQUIP ID number. This number is found on the device's ComDoc sticker. For any issues that ComDoc can not handle (e.g. Print Driver, Network Problems) please contact the ITS Help Desk at x8340.
The toner cartridge is almost empty.
How soon should we replace it?
For simplicity sake, it is best to wait until the toner cartridge runs out completely. Unfortunately, if you replace the toner cartridge of a Xerox MFD early (e.g. 1% remaining) you will need to log into the device in order to reset the toner level. In the event that this happens, call Com Doc at 1-800-321-4846 for assistance.
How do I get printer supplies?
Toner and staples for supported equipment should be requested from ComDoc by calling 1-800-321-4846 and providing the EQUIP ID number (found on the device's ComDoc sticker). There is no additional charge for toner but staples will be charged to your budget. Continue to purchase paper from your usual sources.
What do I do with unused cartridges for the old printer?
New 12/2011
If you have unused toner cartridges or other supplies for the printer that was removed, you can drop them off at the ITS Help Desk located in Horan-O'Donnell 016.
What should I do with used/empty toner cartridges?
Updated 12/2011
In an effort to make it easier for the Canisius Community to do the right thing, we have simplified the process for recycling empty toner cartridges (and full waste-toner containers). Beginning December 2011, when a toner cartridge is empty (or when the waste-toner container is full) repackage the item to be recycled using the packing materials from the new item. Mark the box "RECYCLE" and send it to ITS through Inter-Office Mail.
Can I get trained in the operation of our Xerox MFD?
Yes. Simply send an email to Daniel Misko (DMisko@comdoc.com) and Matthew Field (MField@comdoc.com) to set up a training appointment. If you have a specific question about your Xerox MFD you can also try the Xerox Knowledge base found on the ComDoc web site.
How are costs allocated
when sharing a device with another department?
Contact Frank Kirstein, Director of Computer Infrastructure (x8361) and he will work with you to allocate costs fairly.
Where on my computer do I find the printer?
Most of the time you will see your printer after a Print command in the Printer drop down menu. Select the appropriate printer, which will be listed by location and model. This example, displays devices in Churchill Tower on the fourth, fifth and sixth floors, all by room number followed by the model of each device.
How do I maintain confidentiality
in a shared print/copy environment?
You can control the release of your printout by enabling Secure Printing.
Click here for detailed information about Secure Printing using a Windows PC.
What if our department has needs
that were not considered?
If your department makes use of specialized devices that you don’t feel were included in your department’s overview, or if you have other concerns about how the MFD program will impact you, please contact Frank Kirstein, Director of Computer Infrastructure at Kirstein@canisius.edu.
Where can I find information about our Xerox Device?
A list of the Xerox devices and descriptive brochures for each can be found on the Office Equipment & Technology web page.
