2023-

2024

Limited Very limited funding for faculty travel is available for the 20222023-2023 2024 academic year. Funding will be available to full-time pre-tenure faculty and “long-term without tenure” faculty for the following purposes, in order of priority:

1) Presentation of research at an academic conference, in-person or virtual;
2) Primary research at a field site, archive, library, museum, or event;
3) Commenting on a panel at a professional meeting;
4) Attendance at a governing/editorial board meeting for a professional society;
5) Chairing a session at a professional meeting.

Not every faculty member will be able to receive full funding for every research-related or professional trip they would like to take. My goal is to fund as many trips as possible for as many people as possible. To that end, I will continue to use the following guidelines to stretch our travel budget:

  • Priority given to untenured, tenure-track faculty;
  • Limit of $900.00 in travel funding per faculty member;
  • One trip funded per faculty member;
  • Funding requests must be submitted by September 1, 2022 for Fall semester travel. I will allocate funds based on the requests received, holding back some funding for spring semester trips. If you already have plans for a Spring semester trip, you may submit that request at this time.
  • Funding requests must be submitted by January 31, 2022 for Spring semester travel. If there are unallocated funds, I will consider funding second trips or additional expenses above $900.00 from first trips.

I’ve been told that at some point there was a limit on being away from campus for more than two days for conference travel. That doesn’t make sense to me. Please ignore that past protocol without abusing the privilege (e.g. no ten-day pay-to-play conference in Hawaii the week before spring break). If you are away for an extended period of time for academic reasons, please consider alternative course assignments.

The available funding is $900.00 for each pre-tenure/long-term faculty member. Faculty seeking travel funding should file a Travel Authorization Form on the MyCanisius portal. Please use “Dean of Arts & Sciences—Office (5016)” when prompted to “Add Departmental Budget Source.” Note that I have already approved several travel requests for conferences over the summer and will continue to provide support for those faculty who need to travel before the September 1st application deadline.I am optimistic that in-person professional meetings will resume very soonPlease submit your travel requests by September 1st.

I have a limited amount of discretionary money that may be available for tenured faculty members. Please contact me directly if you have been accepted for presentation at a conference. I will give priority to those who have not travelled in recent years or who are preparing for promotion.
Some departments have agency accounts or endowed funds that can be used to support faculty research and professional travel. I encourage all departments to use those resources. Tenured faculty in departments that lack such funds will be given priority in my funding decisions. Please contact me as soon as possible if you would like to travel this academic year.

I will do my very best to find resources to advance your research agenda and professional development.
