D2L: Release Conditions on Grades
In D2L, we may often have merged courses that, for one reason or another, has grades for certain activities for one Section and not the other. To help prevent confusion, we can set Restrictions on the these grades that “hides” them from students unless they are part of the Section that is allowed to see them. This will work for Groups too. We recommend using the “Drop ungraded items” gradebook option. However, if we are not, we can also use Grade Exemptions:
Exempt students from specific grades
In this demo, we have to Quiz Grades, one for Section 1 and another for Section 2. We want to prevent students from Section 2 from seeing the Quiz Grade for Section 1, and Section 1 Students from seeing the Quiz Grade for Section 2.

| 1 | Go to the Grades tab in the D2L Course Navbar. |
| 2 | Click on the dropdown to the right of a Grade Item that we want to restrict. In the menu that appears, click on Edit. |
| 3 | In the Grade Item edit screen, click on Restrictions. |
| 4 | From there, click on Create and Attach, towards the bottom of the screen. |
| 5 | In the pop-up that appears, for the Condition Type, find the Classlist section. Then select Selection enrollment. |
| 6 | The pop-up will update. Click on Select Section and select the section that we want to be able to view this particular grade. Then click on Create in the bottom left. |
| 7 | When we do, we will be sent back to the Grade Editor. We should see a summary of the Restriction, along with a dropdown under “To access this item, users must satisfy”. The default is All conditions must be met, which is fine for this demonstration. For more information on Release Conditions, see D2L’s Support Document: |
| 8 | Click on Save and Close in the lower-left. |
| 9 | Then, to make sure that the restriction is working, click on User to the right of View by and select the Section we just set up the restriction for. Click on “Apply”. |
| 10 | We should now see another dropdown for Sections, though D2L will have selected one for us by default. |
| 11 | To Preview what a student sees, click on the dropdown arrow to the right of their name. Select Preview from the menu that appears. |
| 12 | A pop-up will appear, showing us exactly how the student will view the gradebook when they click on the Grades tab. In this case, the student can see all of the grades because they are in Section 1 and we have not yet put a Release Condition on the Section 2 Quiz (we can follow steps 2-8 to add a Release Condition). However, if we switch over to a student in Section 2, The only see Demo and Section 2 Quiz. | Section 1 Student Grade Preview Section 2 Student Grade Preview
