D2L: Understanding Gradebook Settings
This is a work in progress and will be updated as needed.
In this tutorial, we are going to take a deep-dive into the Gradebook settings available to use in D2L. We will base this on the screens provided to use via the D2L Grade Setup Wizard. However, we can access most of these settings from the Grade Settings (go to the Grades tab in the D2L Course Navbar and click on the blue settings icon, to the left of Help). For additional details, please see Set up your Grade Book - Brightspace.

Choosing the Gradebook Settings
Step 1: Choose Grading System This will allow us to choose one of three grading system options. Most faculty at Canisius use either the Points Grade or Weighted Grade systems. For more information, please see Grading systems types - Brightspace. |
Step 2: Final Grade Released On this page, we are again presented with three options. |
Step 3: Grade Calculations Here, we have four options to choose from concerning how D2L calculates individual grades (aka, grade items). |
Step 4: Choose the Default Grade Scheme We have two options here. Percentage allows us and our students to view their final grade in percentage format. This is the default selected scheme. Letter allows us and our students to view their final grade in letter range. This makes it a bit easier to transfer their grades when we enter Final Grades into Banner. |
Step 5: Managing View Display Options Ignore this-- just hit continue. |
Step 6: Student View Display Options This allows us to control how we and our students see their grades/their personal grade book for the our course (for faculty, this also includes the whole gradebook). Note: While the previous images were for a Points-based System, in this one we chose a Weighted System as there is an additional option. Ignore number of decimal places to display and number of characters to display for text items. |
Step 7 is just a review of the aforementioned selections/options. |
