Microsoft Teams: Creating Shared Spaces
Table of Contents
Create a Chat
Create a group Chat (similar to texting) for you and others. You can also share documents, though they are automatically set to “Anyone with the link can view”, so make sure that these documents do not contain any private/privileged information.

Teams for Departments/Classes
With a Team, you can communicate with and share documents securely (vs. a Chat, which only allows for publicly sharing documents) with people added to the Team. Creating a Team also creates a SharePoint Site (similar to a Shared Google Drive/Google Sites combination, see SharePoint on the previous page for more information) for that Team, which anyone added to the Team can access.
Similar to a Team, but with additional tools geared towards professional development and training. Additionally, those added as Students cannot simply leave the Class- the owner of the Class must manually remove them.

Channel Types
Team owners can create three different types of Channels: Standard, Private, and Shared. Each have different different access permissions, described below (additional role permissions, i.e., Owner or Member, can be set when a user is added to the Channel). It is also important to note that once a Channel is created, the Channel Type cannot be changed. A more detailed overview of the Channel Types are available here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/standard-private-or-shared-channels-in-microsoft-teams-de3e20b0-7494-439c-b7e5-75899ebe6a0e
Channel Type | Description |
|---|---|
Standard | Everyone added to the Team prior to and after this channel was created will be able to access it. |
Private | Only specific people added to the Team and then added to this channel will be able to access it. |
Shared | People from outside the Team can access this channel. Upon creation, have option to add everyone in the Team to this channel (can still do so manually afterwards).
