Audacity: Troubleshooting Missing Playback/Recording Devices

Sometimes, the playback or recording device we want to use is not showing up in audacity. There are a number of reasons why this might be. Here is how to resolve that.

Click on Audio Setup.

Click on Rescan Audio Devices in the menu that appears.

Then, go back to either Playback Device or Recording Device to select the appropriate device.

 

If the above still does not show the appropriate device, try these tips:

  1. Make sure the device is on

    1. Then try to rescan for the device

  2. Make sure that the devices is connected appropriately/pushed all the way into the appropriate port

    1. Then try to rescan for the device

  3. Restart Audacity with the device plugged in

  4. Restart the computer with the device plugged in

If none of the above works, your device may be faulty. If borrowing a podcasting kit from the library, alert the librarian(s) on duty when you return the kit. If using the Podcast Room (Old Main 402), alert ITS Helpdesk.
