Panopto: Tips and Examples for Discussions

Panopto: Tips and Examples for Discussions

Table of Contents

Tips

  • Make sure to gave a length range (ex., 5 to 10 minutes, 10 to 20 minutes, etc.). This will help students better plan their discussion video and help students not feel overwhelmed/anxious that they did not record enough or recorded too much.

  • Have students create some sort of script. This will help students better plan their video and ensure a smoother experience for all. Make sure students copy and paste or link their script to their discussion board. Doing so has the added benefit of making the recording more accessible to students with impairments (in addition to the automatic captions provided by Panopto).

    • Scripts can be:

      • Bullet points: Provides a more natural conversation but pacing may be interrupted by filler words such as “uh” or “uhm” or long pauses.

      • Full-sentence scripts (i.e., word for word): A fair bit less natural, but smoother experience. Filler words may still creep in while students find the sentences or speak their transcript out loud for the first time while recording.

      • Digital Slideshow: the best of both of the previous, with the added benefit of allowing students to provide additional visuals.

  • Provide another option for those students that do not feel comfortable with recording.

    • This could be having the student create a poster or requiring the student to record audio-only.

  • For any of the previous tips, make sure you are explicit in your instructions.

    • What is the ideal video length?

    • What type of script are you going to have your students use? Do they need to focus on spelling and grammar in their script or is the video presentation more important? Are you going to take points away if the Slideshow is not well-done?

    • If offering alternatives, what are the requirements for the poster? How detailed should the poster be? What are you expecting from audio recordings (ex, transition effects, intro/outro music like you would find in podcasts, etc.)?

Examples

For those more interested in using Panopto for discussions, here are two examples:

Introduction Videos

Welcome to the first week of class! For everyone to get to know each other a bit better, we are going to record videos. Please create a script (either a bulleted list or a full-sentence script, though a slideshow may also be useful) based on the following:

  1. Your name, major, and expected graduation year.

  2. If comfortable, please also provide your pronouns.

  3. Why you are interested in this course [if elective]/What do you expect to get out of this course [if required]?

  4. At least two or three of the following:

    1. Favorite thing to do when you have down time/favorite hobbies/favorite interests/etc.

      1. Hobbies can include playing video games, reading books, playing sports, etc.

      2. Favorite bands/music to listen to

      3. Favorite park(s)

        1. Local/State/National

        2. Theme Parks

    2. Favorite food(s)/restaurant(s)

    3. Pet(s) that you own

    4. Anything else that you feel comfortable sharing/is appropriate to share

After you create your script, record a 3 to 5 minute video using Panopto Capture. Make sure to post both the recorded video and the script (either copy and paste it to the thread or link to it in the thread).

Then, reply to at least two or three fellow students (though more is certainly welcome!). Ensure your replies keep the conversation going and goes beyond “Hey! It’s nice to meet you!”. Do you share similar hobbies and interests? If they share that they like a particular food, perhaps you have a restaurant recommendations or recipes to share? Do you share an interest in music? Additionally, replies can be simple text or Panopto video replies.

Assignment Example

First, please listen to Designing for disability: how video games become more accessible, linked below:

Ma, A., Wong, W., Bridges, C., & Concannon, K. (2024, April 23). Designing for disability: How video games become more accessible [Broadcast]. NPR. https://www.npr.org/2024/04/23/1197964005/the-indicator-from-planet-money-the-last-of-us-accessibility-gaming-04-23-2024

Then, look through the following accessibility resources (note: Game Accessibility Guidelines has a few different levels. I have linked to the "Basic" list, but feel free to explore the Intermediate and Advanced lists). Additionally, you do not need to read all of them. Just pick and choose a few points from each of the following resources that stand out to you and most interesting or important to you.

Additionally, feel free to take a look at the optional materials and works cited and pull information/resources from the articles/presentations/videos provided there.

Then, do either of the following:

  1. Record a 5-10 minute video using Panopto Capture (see tutorials for students here). Write a bulleted script and link to that in your response. Optionally, you may also use a slideshow. In your video, explain why accessibility is important in video games. Additionally, provide a synopsis of the particular points you found important and why they are important. How would you implement these points in your video game? Provide examples.

  2. Create a poster and write a minimum 250 word description/essay. The poster should explain the importance of accessibility in video games using as few words as possible and also quickly describe the points that you found interesting/important. The description/essay should also provide examples how each of the points can be implemented in your game.

Please reply to a minimum of two of your fellow classmates' posts.
