Friends Without Pens

Prior to an exam, allow groups or pairs of students to discuss the exam without beginning it.  Students have five, ten, or more minutes, depending on the material, to discuss problem-solving approaches.  This is appropriate for exams that assess higher forms of skills and creative learning, rather than memorization.
