Resources are available for students and, in some cases, faculty and alumni seeking to apply for highly competitive, prestigious merit-based national and international grants and fellowships such as:

  • The Fulbright Program “provides “provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or for English Teaching Assistant Programs”. Proposals are typically prepared over the summer. The Fulbright website has good resources for applicants at https://us.fulbrightonline.org/applicants/. Draft of applications are due to the Fulbright system by Sept 1. Applicants are interviewed by a faculty panel early in September. The panel will prepare a campus endorsement form to include with applications and potentially give additional feedback if necessary. Final changes to applications must be made by October 12 at 5pm. Initial notifications are sent sometime between November-January and final decisions are made between March-May.
  • Goldwater Scholarships are “one of the oldest and most prestigious national scholarships in the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics in the United States, seeks to identify and support college sophomores and juniors who show exceptional promise of becoming this Nation’s next generation of research leaders in these fields”.
  • Truman Scholarships are “the premier graduate fellowship in the United States for those pursuing careers as public service leaders”.
  • Boren Awards “fund study abroad by U.S. undergraduate students in world regions critical to U.S. interests”.

Students applying for these awards should identify a faculty mentor to help them with their application materials which will then be submitted on behalf of the applicant by Academic Affairs. The Writing Center can also provide support for crafting application materials.

Reach out to Jenn Lodi-SmithYvonne Widenor, assistant vice president for academic affairs, at lodismij@canisius widenory@canisius.edu if you are interested in applying for these or similar programs.
