Creating an Image Caption
1 | Go to D2L an open up the text editor (i.e., module or course activity descriptions, quiz questions, discussion prompts, etc.).
2 | Click on the table icon. **Note: Ensure that your cursor is where you want the table to be.
3 | Click on Insert Table in the menu that appears.
4 | The menu will update and show you a grid. We want a one-column, two-row grid.
5 | In the top row, add your image by clicking on that row and then click on the Insert Image icon. Follow the steps to add the image.
6 | Add caption text in the second row.
7 | Click on Save and Close. |
Advanced Captioning
You may find that the overall style of your newly-captioned image is not to your liking or you simply do not like all of the whitespace that the full table is giving you. Here are the steps to fix that.
1 | Click on the table you want to edit.
2 | Hover over either the left part of the table. Your cursor will change to a re-size widget. Click and drag it toward the image, so that it is roughly the same width.
3 | In the menu at the top, click on the "add column" button. There are two buttons add column buttons, one to add the column before and one to add the column after. Basically, add the column to the left or add the column to the right. In this demo, we will choose the latter.
4 | Pull the table so it is the full width of the page. You may need to resize the original column. To do so, click on the border in the middle and pull it towards the image.
5 | Highlight both rows of the second column.
6 | In the text editor toolbar, click on the Table icon. Then click on the Cell option in the menu that appears.
8 | The menu will update and will provide you with several options. Click on Merge Cells.
9 | In the newly merged cells, write your text. Recommendation: Try to keep the text in the merged cell only as tall as the image and caption itself. Then, to continue writing, click underneath the table. D2L should have created a new row for you to add more text.
10 | Click on the Save and Close button. |
