What does SCALE-UP stand for?

SCALE-UP stands for Student-Centered Active Learning Environment for Undergraduate Programs. The technology installed in SH 1053 was inspired partly by this initiative. More information can be found online at the SCALE-UP website.

 Room Use Policy

Using the Mac Mini's DVD Drive:

Please Note: This room's Mac Mini has an external USB DVD drive (located on the left-side of the same rack enclosure as the Mac Mini), which allows for access of the DVD drive from both the Mac OS and a Windows Virtual Desktop session.

Ejecting the DVD: If you are in a Windows Virtual Desktop session you will need to get back to the Mac OS desktop. You can do this either by ending your session (see instructions at the bottom of the page) or by pressing Command and Tab on the keyboard simultaneously to switch back to the Mac OS desktop; to return to your Windows session simply double-click on the LabImage icon in the VMWare Horizon View Client window.

From the Mac OS you can eject your disc by either pressing the eject button found in the top right corner of the keyboard or by clicking on the disc icon and dragging it to the trash can.

 Using the Floor Pockets

Additional electrical outlets can be found inside the floor pockets located on the floor of the room.

Pull up on the handle to unlatch the cover.

Pull open the cover fully to access
the inside of the floor pocket.

Plug the power cord for your device into
one of the available electrical outlets.

 

A sliding door is located on either
side of the floor pocket cover.

Slide the door clockwise to open it. This
will allow you to close the floor pocket
cover while having cables connected.

To ensure that the cover closes flush,
make sure the two "teeth" opposite the handle
are seated properly into the floor pocket.

Powering Up the Equipment
The equipment is controlled from the lectern using a Crestron Touch Panel Interface.

Instructor's lectern

If the touch panel's screen is black, touch the screen to wake the display. When the Canisius Logo Screen appears, tap the screen and enter the required Access Code (63520).  

 


After successfully entering the Access Code, the equipment will power-up and the Crestron will display the message "Please Wait...LCD Projector Warming-up." Once the projector is ready, the Crestron will display the Main Menu, further identifying the function of the hard-buttons.

 

 


The resident computer, document camera, and Blu-ray player are powered on using the appropriate button located on each device.


Projector Standby (PIC-MUTE)
Each source page (COMPUTER, LAPTOP, CART A, CART B, etc.) has a Projector Standby button located in the lower left corner of the screen. Pressing this button once will place the projector in standby or pic-mute mode. While this mode is active, the button will flash. Simply press the button again to take the projector out of standby mode.


Volume
Each source page (COMPUTER, LAPTOP, CART A, CART B, etc.) has a volume control section located on the right side of the screen. Volume up, down, and mute controls are provided.

NOTE: Computers have their own volume controls which may need to be adjusted separately.


Projection Screen
Press the SCREEN button on the Crestron to display the appropriate touch-screen controls. Up, down and stop buttons are provided.

A wall plate, found beneath the whiteboard tray behind the lectern, can also be used to control the screen.


Resident Computer @ Lectern
Press the POWER button on the resident computer to turn it on. SH 1053 is equipped with a rack mounted Mac Mini computer. Both the Mac and Windows operating systems can be used. Simply select the desired operating system at startup. Two USB ports (located next to the Crestron and next to the computer's power button) are available.

Once the computer has been powered up, press the MAC (Computer) button on the Crestron to display the appropriate touch-screen controls. 
In addition to displaying the image on the projector, a "Send To Carts" touch-button is provided which allows you to display the image on the LCD TVs of the three student collaboration carts.

The computer is located in the rack 


To start a Windows virtual desktop session, click on the Windows VDI icon  located on the dock at the bottom of the screen.


Document Camera
The Doc Cam's power and lights must be turned on manually using the controls located on the camera itself. Click here for more information regarding the document camera found in this classroom.

Once the camera's power is on, press the DOC CAM button on the Crestron to display the appropriate touch-screen controls. 
In addition to displaying the image on the projector, a "Send To Carts" touch-button is provided which allows you to display the image on the LCD TVs of the three student collaboration carts.

Blu-ray or DVD Playback (via the Blu-ray player)
Press the OPEN/CLOSE button on the Blu-ray player and insert your disc (DVD or Blu-ray) into the disc tray. Press the BLU-RAY button on the Crestron to display the appropriate touch-screen controls.

Touch-buttons are provided which allow you to control the Blu-ray player from the Crestron. The only time you ever touch the Blu-ray player itself is to insert or eject your disc.

In addition to displaying the image on the projector, a "Send To Carts" touch-button is provided which allows you to display the image on the LCD TVs of the three student collaboration carts.


Connecting a Laptop
The cables needed for connecting a laptop computer are found on the instructor's lectern. In addition to cables for connecting a laptop, a power outlet is also located on the lectern for your convenience.

1. Plug the HDMI cable into your laptop's HDMI port.*

2. Plug the Ethernet cable into your laptop's network jack (if needed).

3. Press the LAPTOP button on the Crestron to view the "Podium Laptop" screen.

*Don't have an HDMI port on your laptop? An adapter assembly is provided for use with the lectern's HDMI cable so that devices with DVI, DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, Micro HDMI, and Mini HDMI can be connected.


Carts A, B, and C (Control from the Carts)
The equipment is controlled from the cart using a black multi-button Crestron Control Panel.

Student collaboration cart

Press the DISPLAY ON button on the Crestron to turn on the LCD TV. After pressing DISPLAY ON, wait until the button has stopped flashing before selecting the desired source button on the Crestron.

The cables needed for connecting a laptop computer are found at each cart; four VGA cables (with audio) and one HDMI cable are provided.

2. Plug the audio cable into your laptop's headphone jack.* 2. Press the HDMI button on the Crestron.   



3. Press the appropriate button (LAPTOP 1, 2, 3, or 4) on the Crestron.

The "Podium" button is selected whenever "Send To Carts" has been pressed on the Crestron Touch Panel at the lectern.

Pressing DISPLAY OFF on the Crestron will turn off that cart's LCD TV.


*The audio cables associated with each VGA cable only need to be connected if a faculty member is displaying a student's laptop on the LCD projector for the class to view, as any accompanying audio would then be heard through the room's ceiling speakers. If audio playback when working in groups is desired, students must use the built-in speakers on their laptops.


Carts A, B, and C (Control from the Lectern)
Press the CART A, CART B, or CART C button on the Crestron to display the appropriate touch-screen controls.

Once the button is pressed, the currently selected student laptop at the selected cart will then display on the LCD projector and the audio from that laptop will play through the room's ceiling speakers. In addition to displaying the image on the projector, a "Send To Carts" touch-button is provided which allows you to display that image on the LCD TVs of the other two student collaboration carts.

Pressing the "Stop Sending To Carts" touch-button will blank out the image on the LCD TVs of Carts A, B, and C, but the image will remain on the projector. Power ON and OFF touch-buttons are also provided for control of the selected cart's LCD TV.


Powering Down the Equipment
Press the SHUTDOWN button on the Crestron to display the appropriate touch-screen controls. Press the "Yes, Shutdown" button to proceed with shutdown or the "No, Go Back" button to cancel.

 



The resident computer, document camera, and Blu-ray player are each powered off separately. Instructions for shutting down the computer are found below.

Be sure to remove any media from the equipment before shutting it down.

1. Open the Start Menu (click on  in the lower-left corner).

2. Click either the "Logoff Computer" or "Log off" button. You will then be returned to the Mac OS desktop.
